Sound of the wind

The history of Taiza dates way back to the Asuka period when the Empress visited the area to escape a dispute in the capital.

After you drive through the mountains on the national highway, you can enjoy a full view of the magnificent Sea of Japan on your left. You will immediately notice the stylish sign of 'Sumihei Established in the First Year of the Meiji Period'.

The ryokan has been there for some 140 years. It was founded by the master carpenter, Heikichi Shimoda, who was also an exquisite cook. His cooking and hospitality were so well-received by his friends and guests that he decided to open a restaurant. Through six generations of this family business, providing exceptional hospitality has remained their philosophy.

The lobby of the hotel welcomes the visitor with contemporary decor. One side of the lobby is wall-to-wall glass, affording guests a full view of the ocean. Being situated at the foot of a mountain, all the rooms at Sumihei command this breathtaking ocean view.

The room Kazenone (the sound of winds) is located in a cottage called Kinean, which is separated from the main building. It has a twin bedroom, which is decorated with vividly colored Tango Chirimen tapestry. There is also a Japanese style living room, which is connected to a beautiful Karesannsui traditional Japanese garden. The Roten style open-air bath is spacious enough for two people to relax in together and when the sun goes down, you can lie on the king size bed and absorb the mesmerizing sea view. Alternatively, by turning the lights off, you will be dazzled by the silver moonlight reflecting on the small waves of the ocean. If you desire a change of scene, you can try our large communal bath, which consists of an indoor rock bath and a choice of two different open-air baths.

If you prefer a more open atmosphere, we would recommend trying our large communal baths, which offer a variety of indoor and outdoor bathing experiences.

Dining in our renowned restaurant is sure to be a memorable part of your trip to Taiza Onsen. At Kinean, your meals will be delivered to your room so that you can enjoy them in the private and relaxed atmosphere.

There is nothing more exciting than having fresh seafood when you are staying by the seaside. Our guests are spoilt with the local seasonal catch, which is transformed into an exquisite cuisine in the form of sashimi, grilled or slow cooked dishes.

If you arrive in winter, you should never miss Taiza crab. This variety of snow crab is caught within 30 kilometres of Taiza and only five fishing boats are allowed to catch this rare crab. You can also be assured that only the ones hand-picked by the fisherman will turn up on your dinner table. The Taiza crab is not only enjoyed as sashimi, it can also be cooked in a variety of ways such as boiled, grilled, or in a hot pot. Don't miss this rare chance!

After dinner, you can visit the "one coin self bar" in the lobby area. The bar has an extensive range of drinks including Scotch whiskeys such as Edradour and Bowmore as well as our hand-made fruit liquor. Take your favorite drink out on to the terrace and let the sea breeze relax you.
